Understanding

Intellect has not the power
Nor logic depth of insight
To understand the simple truth
Of life's essential purpose
The heart is nearer than reason by far
Our feelings reveal us for what we are.

From The Domini Conspiracy, chapter 56, page 179.

Thomas Paine once said that,

My mind is my own church."

But I couldn't conclude yet
whether we should listen to our hearts or let our minds dictate us.

I like "love is the key". I am a christian, and the more I learn about religions the more I am proud to be a christian. Love is the key!

Just thought that I'd return the favor as you visited my lowly blog. As an avid reader, I think I'll put this book on my "read soon" list so that I can return and discuss!

This life after death business - does it happen on earth ? Or do the human conciousness move on to another realm altogether ?

Hi Jan,

That's a good question! No one has yet fathomed exactly what consciousness is but some see it as the essence of our being which inhabits the human form, learning and developing from the experience of physical life. There is evidence that consciousness survives the death of the body. This is disputed of course but the increasing ability of medical science to rescuscitate otherwise brain-dead individuals who recount similar out-of-body and spiritual experiences is beginning to cause some doubters to re-think their position. If it is true that consciousness survives death, and I have a strong personal view that it does, I see no reason why we shouldn't continue to inhabit the same universe. This is certainly the model described in The Domini Conspiracy - but there are alternative models.

Ok - I think I understand the position now: Because people who "were" dead have memories of the event which seem to have originated outside of themselves physically, this suggests that those events did really take place.

There is a sense of an uncomfortable familiarity in this. "Primitive" religions also ascribe true reality and deeper meanings to their dreams. People in modern societies have come to view their dreams more objectively, and are not much distrubed by the "out of body" aspects thereof. Why then are near-death experiences afforded such importance ?

Thanks for coming back Jan. I suppose near-death-experiences (NDEs) are given such credence because of the coherence of the individual experience and the similarity of the accounts from different people. More information can be found at www.near-death.com and the website of Dr David Nicholls at www.drdjnicholls.clara.net. The latter site is particulary useful as it forms part of a PhD thesis.
As a young man I eschewed beliefs in God or an afterlife and put my faith in science but the profound experience I had at age 27 (similar to that ascribed to David MacLeod in The Domini Conspiracy - extract on blog) changed my view about continuity of life and the significance of 'love'. To me, however, it was outside of any conventional religious model - being more universal in its nature.
